Output designer Emily Dann was one of 15 creatives from across the globe invited to help guide the future of Adobe’s Illustrator software.

As part of its Grand Summit, Adobe were keen to understand the workflow and methods of different creatives – including graphic designers, illustrators and typographers – to inform the future development of Illustrator. Wanting to hear opinions from a broad range of people that use the programme in their work every day, Adobe invited Emily to help define what an ideal future pathway for the software looks like.

“We worked in groups to hear and share ideas about the future of the software and got involved in panel discussions about design trends and the potential features of the product. I got to see how bugs are logged and how the product will be optimised, as well as potential tools that have been designed to aid collaboration between creatives and across Adobe’s suite of products,” Emily said of the experience. “The future of the programme – how much more intelligent and intuitive it’s going to become – is so exciting for our industry. The work that Adobe’s product engineers put into their software is truly incredible.”

The future of the programme – how much more intelligent and intuitive it’s going to become – is so exciting for our industry.”

As well as sharing how she’s used Illustrator in some of her own work on-stage, seeing and experiencing how other creatives use the software was an eye-opening experience. “Everyone has their own way of working and their own processes they follow, so it was great to share my own tips and tricks as well as see how others work,” she continued. “I’ve picked up good habits from other creatives. Until you sit next to someone and focus on how they’re working, you don’t see the ins and outs. It really opened my eyes to the organisation and structure of my work, which can be just as important as the final outcome.”

As well as helping to map the future of Illustrator, Emily found time to take in the extreme contrasts of Delhi. “I’d heard it was a welcoming and warm place, but nothing prepared me for the contrasts of the city. The people I met were incredible – they take so much pride in where they live. It’s a vibrant cocktail of culture and ideas, and a really inspiring place to visit.”
